1) Scope of work. Exactly what are you going to change?
2) What are you going to do yourself and what are you going to hire someone else to do?
3) Interview and select contractor and/or subcontractor(s).
4) meet with him/her/them to discuss schedule, permits, inspections, etc. and set start date.
5) remove all of your stuff before start date.
6) remove cabinets, counters, plumbing fixtures. flooring. walls, electric fixtures and lights.

After that it depends on what the scope of work is.

1. Scan your kitchen for a visual sense of what it looks like now, and how you want it to be. Start with the cabinets or the countertops.

2. Browse through magazines, websites & TV shows for ideas on how simple changes can alter the look of your kitchen. Customizing them for your own layout is the easiest way forward.

3. Pick a floor plan, consult with kitchen design experts, or follow the do-it-yourself way to start remodeling.

make sure you have plenty of money (cause they're gonna find things that need fixing, that you'd never expect...) make sure you can get your cabinets and fixtures on time. Make sure all your contractors do their jobs (ask for licenses). Have a backup plan...and make sure you have a place to eat while the kitchen is dismantled.

Same answer as the others, plus remember there is no such thing as easy money. High end, and large scale means fast but top quality work. Subcontractors can let you down. I would recommend start smaller, and work your way up to what you want. You need to know a lot, even to do the management only.

Some community colleges have building construction technology, building code courses, etc. Also, contact your local building inspection department. Some have ROP students, internships, etc.

There is a lot of information on the internet on construction. Especially look for information on things in your area. Building code interpretations are often different from city to city, even if they use the same book.

Right now, construction is down due to the economy, and the work is scarce, but by the time you are ready to get into this, it should be going again.

For a start you will require a Building Lic/ However I would go to classes to find out what's involved in the renovation situation.
There is alot you will need to know, and that would include design/both inside and outside of home which includes landscaping.
Knowledge is of the utmost/ supervisor /construction/ estimates/
hiring of traders(subcontractors) Electrical/plumbing/air conditioning/
carpentry/brickies/ etc .

You will need to keep your wits about you and do it in stages. Its not a bad job, but very long and time consumming, especially if you have two or three jobs on the go.
But I would recommend you do a course in all that i have mentioned
It may seem easy, it's generally the small things that get you into trouble.
Also make sure you have the funds to start off.
Good luck
